with Jasbinder Garnermann
The shadow is the unconscious part of ourselves that we reject because it’s the opposite of our image of ourselves (the Persona), and also of what we aspire to be (our Ego-Ideal).
However much we try and repress our shadow, it subverts our best intentions and breaks out in our behaviour, through Freudian slips, projections, neuroses, addictions, and psychosomatic illnesses.
Jung wrote that the shadow is 90% pure gold because once we have the courage to face it, we also release the healthy instincts, vitality, and aspects of the real self that were rejected because they did not fit in with the norms and values of our upbringing and culture.
Jung regarded the shadow as the greatest moral problem of our times because when it is repressed, it explodes destructively both in our personal and societal lives. Healing our relationship with this ancient part of ourselves also heals our relationships with the world around us, helping us to be more compassionate and forgiving of the shortcomings of others because we have made peace with our own.
All the psychic energy that we once used to hold down the lid on the shadow is now freed and available for the fullness of life, self-expression, playfulness, flexibility and creativity.
